Moly Fusion for Firearms
Most hunter's work on their own cars and therefore get exposed to the isle of fuel and oil additives you can put in every opening of our 4x4 Trucks. Over the years I find my self to be a sucker to trying out products on that isle of the engine parts store. Its in my nature to try new things out to see what does and doesn't work as advertised. This is the reason most of our readers come to GunMuse, to let me waste my money and tell you how it went. For reference the only fuel injector cleaner that I ever found to work damn near instantly is STP Complete, yeah that $8 bucks per Grey bottle stuff, not the $2 red bottle. Valvoline Synthetic Gear oil in my rear end gave me 4 MPG in my old Chevy Blazer. Quaker State Oil keeps my engine cleaner longer out here in 120 degree dusty days of the New Mexico desert. Other than that the $30,000 + that I have spent over the years I couldn't show you one ounce of improvement for the money I spent.
I recently received a request to review a product called Moly Fusion made for firearms. I am anal about what lubricants and cleaners go on my guns. I just want to slap someone I see spraying down a gun with WD-40 (The gunsmiths greatest income generator). In fact if your gunsmith recommends WD-40 he is fishing for new business it really can cause that many problems. Back on subject.
This has been one of better conversations with a business we have had in a long time. The owner actually knew what his product did and how it interacted with the metal. Trust me a lot of companies are really salesmen for Chinese made products and the staff just sells, they have no clue what the product really does other than generate a commission check. So when we have the ability to ask indepth questions about the product my staff gets giddy, because it usually means we can tear someone apart for over marketing their product. You give us a good base of information about what your product actually does and we will test it way beyond what you can imagine it would be used for.
What I got from Shooters Solutions was 3 sample kits of varying sizes, some very good instructions on what to do and not to do with the product, no hat (dammit). The Shooter Solution kits included both the Moly Fusion oil and Moly Fusion paste. The oil is basically the paste mixed 8:1 with oil.
I should start by telling you what Moly is in order for you to understand what Moly Fusion does. Moly is mined mineral and is basically a SOLID lubricate, it also transfer heat at extremely high rates of transfer dispersing heat loads over larger areas. The Moly permanently fuses to metal providing a lubricated metal surface that is permanent even when dry. When other lubricates are applied to that surface in machinery you get a reduction in load, temperature, and wear. In the past shooters used Moly balls and a bullet tumbler to tumble bullets to increase bullet velocity. This put a small "coat" of Moly on the outside of the bullets and reduced the friction inside the barrel. This proved to be not very cost effective as you just sent More of your money downrange. The concept of Moly Fusion is to FUSE the Moly to the liner of your barrel's rifling giving you same effect without sending your money down range.
First it promoted as a shooting product but its a fusible dry lubricate between any two moving metal parts. We applied Moly Fusion to all the moving parts in our Colt Gold Cup, a New Charles Daly 12 gauge shotgun, Smith and Wesson Air light 357 mag, DPMS AR-15, Ruger Mini-14, a 77 Chevy El Camino with a SS Motor, and on our Ford 555C Back Hoe. What did we learn.
The Colt Gold Cup- Smoothed up our hammer fall, extremely helped in cleaning(we use hp38), Slide was always silky smooth so it was hard to tell the difference. Pistol did cock and load the first round easier. Would probably be a more noticeable improvement on a pistol that hadn't seen 50,000 + rounds.
Charles Daly Shotgun- This was a new shotgun and the lady who owned it was having a problem with it misfeeding after only one month of use. We took it apart to clean and Molied the gun and found Packing Styrofoam in the action. The owner was afraid to take the trigger assembly apart to clean the shotgun for fear springs would shoot everywhere. We cleaned it out and applied Moly Fusion to EVERYTHING. The difference was noticeable right away. The 12 gauge shotgun had a broke in feel to it and cycling the next round so was easy it felt as if it wasn't loaded when you cycled. Definite improvement there. We were using Federal Shotshells which are extremely clean anyway so there was no way to acknowledge ease of cleaning on this gun. I can say Records were set by 3 different shooters that day One shooter got 7 Dove with one shot, another 8 Dove, and the Third 9. Me well I got 1, never caught them lined up like that, damn the luck.
Smith and Wesson Airlight- This one was easy to do and had a nice effect on how the revolver functioned. If you have ever owned one of these they get dirty quick and there was a definite improvement in trigger feel. We were very happy with the effects that it had on our carry pistols and since this is a Dry lubricate (When applied wet wipe off the oil and its still lubricated permanently) Anyway, Dry lubricate means no staining of our clothes when we carry the gun concealed. We are assuming a protection from rust due to body sweat is gained but only time will tell on that one.
AR-15 and Mini-14- Here we noticed a change in recoil. The actions were crisp and smooth. The reduction in recoil is due to a change in the pressure in the rifle's chamber and barrel. The throat resistance was reduced so much that the bullet didn't allow a build up of pressure in the chamber but spaced powder burning over a larger volume of the barrel. We saw an increase in muzzle velocity from 3100 to 3250 fps but what powder you use will have a completely different effect here. I would suggest if your buying this product for a High Powered Rifle that you reload with a slower burning powder and reduce your recoil even further, make full use of all your barrel to accelerate the bullet and not just the chamber. Your shoulder and your the life of your rifle will love you for it.
77 El Camino - Now why did we do this? Simple its a metal to metal friction reducer and Moly Rings are KNOWN to improve performance in performance motors. We added 1 0z of Moly Paste directly to our Crankcase. 300 miles later you would of sworn we had a fresh motor. Throttle response became very snappy. Engine temperature dropped 7 degrees. I run 12 degrees of timing advance and starting was a completely different animal. The old muscle car motor sprang to life and I can honestly say I would spend $150 any day for the increase in performance that I got. I am going to go ahead and use it on the front bearings and rear end to see if I get an improvement in gas mileage. I also am going to apply it to the cooling system to reduce drag on the water pump which I am hoping will give me 2-4 hp there. I applied another 1 0z at 700 miles and saw a bigger improvement. Quieter valves smooth pickup and 13 mph in the 1/4 mile. Yes I picked up 13 mph in the quarter. And Yes I play with my toys. I have every intention now of lubing every part of my 4x4 Blazer and all my trailer bearings.
Ford 555C Backhoe - Again why would we do this- Well we were so impressed with how it worked on our car we put it in the crankcase of our Diesel. The only thing we could tell from this was a lower operating temperature and we are hoping for a longer lasting engine as the repair bills for a diesel are sky high. This is one place we would of liked to of seen Moly Fusion in Grease form to lube all of grease zerks on our U-joints and swivel points.
Frankly we were completely impressed at the fact the changes were visible and all of us like to actually SEE what we bought. I would love to see this technology applied to Air compressor oil and Refrigerated air oil. I can see this company becoming a part of several industries and have to highly recommend this product for anyone who is like me and can't help but tinker when there is nothing wrong to begin with. Great product and we look forward to reviewing some of the other lines offered by this company.
